I first read this author's IN CASE OF EMERGENCY and recognized that it was the work of a talented writer. As for this novel (IF ONLY IN MY DREAMS) I recognized she was a superb writer. One of the best in the genre. I was so taken with this book that I did something I have never done before; I went back to the beginning and read it again. The characters are well-drawn and three-dimensional, the dialogue is believable and often touching, and the story is believable. Although it's labeled a Christmas story, it transcends the season and is for anyone trying to accept being gay. I will keep it on my kindle to certainly read again.Product details

I liked Charlie and Gavin so much! They knew each other when younger and meet by coincidence trying to rent a car when the flights home for Christmas are cancelled due to weather. Necessity is the mother romance, and the need to share the ride leads to....well, rides of a difference sort.
I spent a bit of time frustrated with how these two behaved as youth, as they reflected on their past. They were both so selfish and stupid. However, I suppose that it was realistic. Fourteen year old boys do not have a ton of maturity to help them navigate romantic relations.
Two side stories add depth to the story. Charlie's sister had been deathly ill but is now healthy. Gavin's parents react with confusion to his coming out. Thankfully Gavin has Charlie and his family for support.
Great, uplifting holiday love story. The best part Gavin is a shy, tentative dude, but not afraid to sound vulnerable when talking about sex with Charlie. I found that to be freaking adorable!
Lost love? Fate interferes! They hate each other! Haven't takef to each other for years. Can they survive a car ride across the country? He promised his 8 year old sister Ava who is in remission that he would be home for Christmas!

This was a great story. I have to say that I'm so glad I picked up my first book by Keira Andrews ([bookKick at the Darkness|25543022]) because I just love her writing. The characters are believable and likable and the stories are realistic and well written.
Charlie is a college student in San Francisco. Charlie is gay and has been out for years and his family accepts him. He grew up in Connecticut with his parents and little sister, Ava, who he loves very much. Ava had leukemia and Charlie donated bone marrow to help save her. Ava is in remission now but Charlie promised to be home for Christmas and is determined to keep his word.
Gavin is a college student in San Francisco (different college from Charlie). Gavin and his family moved to Connecticut when he was 14. Gavin is gay but has lived a lie for years because his father gave him the indication it wasn't alright and that he wouldn't love Gavin if he was gay. Gavin had a girlfriend in his high school years but they broke up before college when he couldn't keep lying to himself about his sexual inclinations anymore.
Gavin and Charlie lived 10 houses down from each other and were actually best friends for the first few months. Unfortunately, issues arose (having to do with attraction and what Gavin's father did to him) which broke up their friendship and had them as odds for their high school years. Both Gavin and Charlie heard that the other was going to college in San Francisco but they didn't get it touch while they were both there.
When the story begins, Charlie is trying to get home but his flight has been cancelled because of massive storms. He finds that all transport is booked and he gets to the last car rental place just after they've rented the last car. As it turns out, the last car was rented to Gavin and although they're both uncomfortable about the situation, they deal with it because it's for Ava and Christmas. The trip is a bit rough at first but thankfully, Charlie and Gavin get a chance to talk about their past and the fact that Gavin is really gay. Once their past issues have been dealt with, Charlie and Gavin find their attraction and emotions for each other are still there and very strong and they act on them. There are some difficulties with Gavin's parents but things work out well in the end and Gavin and Charlie head back to college, together and working towards a HEA.
I greatly enjoyed this story. I loved both Gavin and Charlie. They're both good heroes that just needed to talk things out and get over their past. Although the length of the story worked because of the past relationship between Charlie and Gavin, I do wish the story had been longer...mostly just because I liked it and didn't want it to end. Overall, this was a great Christmas romance and I'd recommend it. D
There is a lot packed in just 129 pages. A lot of times I pass on short books because things come together too fast and there isn't enough time to get to know the main characters. I didn't feel that way with Gavin and Charlie.
Gavin moved into a house down the street from Charlie when they were both in eighth grade. Gavin is attracted to Charlie right away, and Charlie feels the same way. Charlie took a chance and kissed Gavin, and Gavin was just as into it as Charlie, even though Charlie didn't know that. Gavin confessed his feelings for Charlie to his dad, and his dad's advice derailed their relationship and stopped it in its tracks. Gavin decides to stay away from Charlie. Charlie ends up with his heart broken. He sees Gavin with a new girlfriend and comes to the conclusion that Gavin really wasn't gay and regrets what happened between them. He even tries to talk to him again so they can at least be friends, but Gavin shuns him. Heartbreaking for both of them.
They go through high school and after graduation (still not talking to each other) they both enroll at different universities, across the country in San Francisco. On their first Christmas break Charlie and Gavin head home, but bad weather has caused dozens of flight delays and cancelations. Fate and circumstances come together and they end up sharing a rental car on the road trip back home. It was just what they both needed. Time to clear the air and time to see that what they've both wanted all along is to be with each other.
One thing that makes a good book for me, is when I can feel the tension and emotion between the main characters. And I did in this book. Gavin and Charlie ached to be with each other. I also like books about first loves, so that was a plus for me. And they didn't have to wait years and years to finally get together. They're just 18 and they have everything to look forward to.
I first read this with unlimited, but I ended up purchasing my own copy before I even finished it.
Only thing I'd change is to make it longer. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll be a book II. ;)
